ProximiKey™ is a free service that uses the location of your cell phone to protect your online accounts and financial transactions, such as logins or credit card purchases. This is an optional feature offered by service providers who host any type of online account you may have (the list is long) or who provide you with credit cards, for example banks or other financial institutions. You simply sign-up with us for a ProximiKey™ account, download the free app, and then enable the feature in participating service providers.

There has been some confusion surrounding the terms 2-factor and 2-step and whether they are the same thing- they are not, and it’s worth clarifying the difference to understand how ProximiKey™ applies.

Taking your bank account login as an example, 2-factor authentication means using 2 pieces of information to verify your identity, most commonly your login password plus a code the bank sends you to enter into a separate field. 2-step refers to this added process of the bank sending you the code (Step 1) and you then entering it into their website (Step 2). ProximiKey™ is a type of 2-factor authentication that uses your account password plus the location of your phone to verify your login, so it essentially eliminates the 2-step process of waiting for a code and then entering it- a seamless and much simpler transaction. You might think of it as zero-step!

When it comes to protection of realtime transactions like credit card purchases however, 2-step does not typically apply and so ProximiKey™ provides a unique solution in the fight against financial fraud.

ProximiKey™ is currently being offered under a private Beta test program to select Service Providers and their customer base.
